TapPoint RaceTimer

Example Session
TapPoint RaceTimer Version 1.1

This section demonstrates an example session using TapPoint RaceTimer to time five cars at the same time.

1. RaceTimer opens in the Races view, which lists all the saved races that are stored on the device.  To start a new race, tap New..., which brings up the New Race dialog.

Races New Race dialog
2.  In the New Race dialog, assign a category to the race, then pick a track from the list of recently used tracks, from the built-in list over 50 tracks, or add your own. Tracks Popup Tracks dialog
3. Enter up to 5 car numbers in the New Race dialog in their relative starting order, and pick a color (or shade of gray on non-color devices) to use for each car icon, then Tap OK. Car numbers and colors
4. RaceTimer is now ready to start timing, and the car predicted to cross first is shown in the Next position.  Choose a reference point anywhere on the track that you will use as a crossing point for timing laps. Race Start
5. When the first car among those that you are timing crosses the reference point, whether or not it is the predicted Next one shown, tap the Time button, or press either of the two inner device hardware buttons.  This will record a time and move the Next car icon to the other side of the dotted line. Time Device Buttons First Time
6. Press any one of the Time buttons when each of the other cars that you are timing crosses your reference point (use both thumbs on the two device buttons when cars are very close together).  All of the car icons will be moved to the Last Time Order area.  First 3 Times First 5 Times
7. As soon as there is a break in the action, look at the car icons in the Last Time Order area and check whether the cars crossed your reference point in the order shown (when more than 3 cars are shown, they stagger side-by-side, and the order in this case is 93, 68, 0, 63, 71).  You have until the cars come around again to check and verify the order for this crossing, but you must remember the order that the cars actually passed you on this lap, so do it as soon as it is convenient, and keep your eyes on the track when the cars are passing you. First 5 Times
8. If the order of the car icons is correct for this crossing, tap the Check button under the car icons or press either of the two outer device hardware buttons to confirm the order.  Let's assume in this example that the order is correct for this first crossing.

Check Device Buttons

9. After pressing the Check button, the car icons are cleared from the Last Time Order area.  The lap count shows 0 for each car because no full laps have been completed yet. First Crossings Verified
10. Here come our leaders, coming around again.  The 93, 68, and 0 cars are racing close together and pulling away a gap from the rest of the pack.   Press a Time button when each of these three cars passes your reference point.  The results display at the top is now starting to show lap times and the relative position of the cars. First 3 Laps
11. There is a large enough gap in the cars that you have time to look down at the Last Time Order and verify that the 93, 68, and 0 cars passed in the order shown.  Press the Check button to clear them from the Last Time Order area.  You can clear cars from the Last Time Order area as often as you want, and processing cars in smaller clumps makes it easier to remember and verify the order within each clump. First 3 Laps Verified
12. Here come the 63 and 71 cars now, but it looks like 71 car has passed the 63.  Don't worry about it now, just make sure to press the Time button at each of the two crossing times and you can fix the order later. Last 2 Cars
13. Now looking down at the Last Time Order display, you see that the 63 and 71 were expected to cross in that order, but in fact the 71 car was first.  You can now tap on the 63 car icon to get a popup list of car numbers and pick the '71' to indicate that it was the car in that position.  You can tap on any of the cars in the Last Time Order area to specify the correct car corresponding to that press of the Time button, and you can also drag the car icons with the stylus to change their order. Car popup
14. Now that the Last Time Order shows the correct order for this group of cars, press the Check button to confirm and clear them.  The results display on top is updated to show that car 71 is now in 4th place with the correct lap time of 1:43.04. Last 2 Cars Swapped First Laps Verified
15. Continue each lap in this manner until the race is finished, then tap the Stop button.  At any time during or after the race, you can tap on an entry in the results list to view all of the lap times for that car. Stopped race Car #93 Laps
